Africa Umoja The Spirit of Togetherness is a pulsating musical celebration of South African song and dance. From the potent rhythms of tribal music to the intricate steps of gumboot dancing; from the foot-stomping jazz of Sophiatown to the inspirational full-throated joy of Gospel; and the powerful pounding energy of Kwaito.
With a full cast of South Africa’s brightest and most versatile performers, drummers and marimba players, Africa Umoja is a joyous celebration of dynamic talent, thrilling energy, great voices and sensual dancing; sweeping across the bright and vibrant South African musical landscape.
Creators of the show – Todd Twala and Thembi Nyandeni (who were part of the all time successful Ipi-Ntombi) – were inspired to develop a production that could express their own heritage and create opportunities for underprivileged South African youth, resonating with their own disadvantaged backgrounds and success thereof.
The full production opened at the Victory Theatre in South Africa in 2000 and moved to London’s Shaftsbury Theatre in Nov 2001 immediately captivating audiences worldwide. Since then the show has toured to over 50 countries across the globe. The cast were hailed in The West End as “having enough energy to light up London”.
Africa Umoja has continued to wow the press and fans to date with its honest energy and vibrant voices. An uplifting experience that has audiences dancing in their seats and aisles!
