Dennias Mashegwane, also known affectionately to us as Moribo, has been a founding member of my ensembles Stone Aged Souls and Roots Grown Deep since 2011, both of which we launched from our home province of Limpopo, South Africa. Dennias is also a co-founder of the Shindig Awé artist collective, a diverse, multi-racial and multi-disciplinary group which produced the first Limpopo-wide production of visual, poetic and musical art, ‘Have We Put Out the Fire?’.
Dennias has toured nationally and internationally as a member of Stone Aged Souls and Roots Grown Deep. Stone Aged Souls was selected by Alliance Francaise and IFAS as the featured Southern Africa touring ensemble in 2013, during which we performed at Johannesburg Feté de la Musique, Pretoria, Port Elizabeth, Maseru. This tour was organized by AF’s Johannesburg Cultural Coordinator at the time, Lauren Ceas. Dennias was also a featured member of Roots’ Limpopo tour in 2016, supported by Concerts SA.
Since then, Dennias has featured with Roots Grown Deep for a number of concerts supported by AF/IFAS, including an epic 9-piece ensemble performance at night at Pretoria’s Feté de la Musique in 2017. He was also a musician in the ensemble that produced my album, Grow Within And You Shall Not Go Without (2016), which is available on all streaming platforms. Dennias and I also worked together to launch and direct the first installment of Village Tourism Trust’s innovative rural drama program, Fireside Theatre.
