Soweto Theatre honours ‘The Big 5’ in spectacular song and dance

This summer season the Soweto Theatre brings you The Big Five – an extravaganza of the best that the city has to offer, ranging from award winning and critically acclaimed productions, to creations that honour icons who play a ambassadorial role by taking authentic local sounds and customs to the world.

Audiences are in for a spell of treats as the Africa Umoja – 10 to 20 October 2019; The Soweto Gospel Choir – 23 October to 03 November 2019;Hugh Masekela Heritage Festival and Exhibition – 9th October to 9th November 2019;; as well as our very own New Years Eve Countdown Soweto In Colours – 31 December 2019 to 1 January 2020.  Come home to where it all began.

Filling the stage with vibrant costumes, incredible vocals and uplifting songs, the Soweto Gospel Choir will perform music from their Grammy winning Freedom album. In 90 minutes of indisputable bliss, audiences will be left exhilarated as they dance in the aisles to the choirs dynamic interpretation of both traditional and contemporary music, adding it’s unique feel and inspiration to both.

Also on the line-up is a proudly South African and world-acclaimed theatre production which symbolizes the ‘spirit of togetherness’ in a two hour explosion of song and dance performed for Kings, Presidents and members of the public in over 50 cities worldwide. Africa Umoja tells the tale of South Africa, its people and their song. The journey starts from the earthy tribal dances of courtship and celebration, right through to the thumping rhythms of Kwaito.

In reference to a festival held in his honour, , Now in its 5th edition, The Hugh Masekela Heritage Festival continues to be an embodiment of his spirit. This year, in addition a day of family fun, with exquisite entertainment and glorious food available for all ages, it will also live alongside an exhibition of Hugh’s memorabilia ranging from  his trumpets to photo exhibitions.

Our New Years Eve offering Soweto In Colours will be a blaze of colour with a 10 minute spectacular firework display, supported by local live bands, dancers and DJs performing throughout the evening, plus plenty of food and drink stalls. Soweto in Colours Count Down to 2020, organised in partnership with Jozi FM radio station, will boast two stages, 20 DJs and a moment of celebration as the clock strikes midnight at Soweto’s only outdoor Amphitheatre the Jabulani Ampitheatre.

Ticket includes the following:
1. Taxi from Joburg Theatre to Soweto Theatre and back to Joburg Theatre.
